In May 1970, the new Kroger opened up in Chillicothe Plaza, which was the former location of PennyFare.
Hundreds of people lined up to get inside the store once opened. That may have been in part because store manager, George Cooke, had announced through advertisements that free food items would be presented to the first 500 customers in the store that day.
